JL Wood Ranch is located in both in the "cone" of the Arroyo Seco River, the former river bottom land between two high cliffs, and on the adjoining elevated "bench". The highly mineralized soils are a sandy loam; the result of millions of years of weathering of the ancient granite mountains of the Santa Lucia Mountains adjacent to our vineyards. The vineyard blocks are dotted with rounded granite cobblestones, lovingly referred to as the “Arroyo Seco potatoes.” Winemakers themselves, Paul and Carol Morrison aim to provide high quality Chardonnay to producers of premium wines leveraging the latest viticulture research and supporting technology.

The History of JL Wood Ranch
Rich with agricultural history, JL Wood Ranch has been owned and operated by the same family for over a century. The ranch was originally part of the Spanish land holding known as Rancho Arroyo Seco, granted in 1840 by Mexico’s governor of California. During that time, the ranch was a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Mission San Antonio and Mission Soledad. The land and surrounding areas have been continuously farmed during that time, including cattle and sheep, various grains, alfalfa, fruit trees, corn, beans, lettuce, and broccoli. In the 1990s wine grapes became the most recent addition to the ranch.
Carol Wood Morrison, descendent of Jim Wood now runs the ranch with her husband, Paul Morrison. As a family legacy they are committed to responsible farming their ranch so it can be enjoyed by future generations.
