In 2012, Jake Evans purchased the then abandoned olive grove with the intent to plant a vineyard. Originally courted by a large winery to do a high production model, Jake and VPS instead designed the original 80 acres to balance high quality with moderate yields. With limited water and the warmth of this northeast corner of Adelaida District, the vineyard has produced less than 3 tons per acre nearly every year, with the benefit of usually being the first Cab Sauv vineyard to ripen in Paso Robles. Seeing the success of the original planting, another twenty acres were planted with different clones and rootstocks all over the small, steep contours on the northern edge of the ranch. With the benefit of inputs from Jake’s organic fertilizer business, the focus on healthy, live soils keeps the vine canopies healthy through summer heat waves. Additionally, solar and storage batteries power most of the wells and a novel water filtration system promotes salt-free irrigation. In sum, this ranch leans heavily into technology for efficient, clean operation while focusing on organic practices for the highest quality fruit.
